Our experts determine the vehicle’s CO2 hotspots to enable CO2-optimised production of electric vehicles. They use their best technical judgement to create a life cycle assessment, also known as an LCA. This ISO-standardised method (DIN EN ISO 14040 and DIN EN ISO 14044) documents all of the vehicle’s components and then ascertains the vehicle’s impact on the environment throughout its entire life cycle – from the raw material extraction to production, assembly and the usage phase of the vehicle, through to the dismantling to recycle the materials.
Life cycle assessments examine various impact categories. One of these is the global warming potential which converts the environmental impact into CO2 equivalents (CO2e). CO2 equivalents enable the effect on the climate to be compared.
The environmental impact is determined using special software containing a database with information from along the supply chain. The values calculated using the software have a certain level of uncertainty and can change as a result of regular updates to the calculation method. For especially energy-intensive production stages, such as battery cell manufacturing, Volkswagen utilises specific data from the respective suppliers rather than averages values for the ID. models. This procedure is also referred to as a specific life cycle assessment. This summarises the effect of the measures which we utilise to reduce CO2 emissions – and also shows the quantity of CO2e that actually needs to be compensated for.
CO2 equivalents generated by the supply chain and production including logistics are taken into account when calculating the CO2 footprint of our ID. models.
This calculation also includes the transport of the vehicles to dealerships throughout Europe, the first battery charge before handover to the customers as well as dismantling of the vehicle for recycling (excluding the high-voltage battery). Only CO2 equivalents generated during the further use and maintenance are not considered. The results of the life cycle assessment are independently verified and certified by TÜV Nord.
